A week of work, a world of change in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

Compassion without Borders just got back from hosting an intensive weeklong spay/neuter clinic in a new location, Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. The clinic, which was a raging success with over 262 animals serviced all free of charge, came on the heels of a humane euthanasia training CWOB recently implemented in the same region as part of a multifaceted effort to assist the local government to bring about much needed humane reform. Gratefully, the local government is very eager to work on behalf of the animals and have tremendous partners to support our efforts.

Wherever we go south of the border, needy animals are eagerly awaiting our help – and Puerto Peñasco was no exception. The clinic opened up at 7:30 each day and every day lines of people and animals flooded the yard of the local community center where we set up our clinic. The response from the impoverished region’s residents was overwhelming and despite 12-hour workdays from our all-volunteer team, we invariably had to turn away animals each day.

The focus of the clinic was to provide high quality, free sterilization to as many animals as we could during our time down south. In addition, all animals were given full health exams, fully vaccinated, dewormed, given flea and tick control, collars, ID tags, and leashes.

In addition, we provided pretty much any veterinary service we could to the animals in the area, seeing as how this was likely their only shot to receive any medical attention. Such was the case with Chocolata, a beautiful Doberman cross who was raced to the clinic after laboring for three days and becoming so weak she could barely move.

Chocolata had been rescued after being hit by a car a year ago by the gentlemen who literally arrived to the clinic breathless after racing as fast as he could on foot to get her to us. When she was hit, her pelvis had broken and she could not properly birth the pups. She showed up shocky, near death, and in horrific pain.

Chocolate was stabilized and given an emergency surgery and she and her beautiful puppy, Cacao, did just fine. They were cared for around the clock by our veterinarians following the lifesaving intervention and ultimately returned to Felipe, the kind man who brought her in.

Both Chocolata and Cacao would surely have died had Felipe even waited one more day and had we not been able to provide the free surgery Chocolata’s life depended on.

And then there was Cookie, a Sharpei mix that couldn’t even open her eyes due to a severe case of entropion, a congenital condition wherein the eyelids roll inward and cause pain and discomfort. Cookie was spayed and given the surgery she needed to correct her eyelid disorder. After the surgery Cookie’s eyes were open wide and she will go on to live many years pain free and with the ability to see the world thanks to our clinic.

At the end of the clinic, CWOB met with the local mayor to discuss setting up ongoing sterilization efforts and to establish an agreement for the humane euthanasia program. The mayor was very supportive of our work and more than eager to partner with us on both the spay/neuter and humane euthanasia fronts.

CWOB plans to head back to the region within the year for another high-volume clinic with an emphasis on training local vets, as well.

Look what was accomplished in one week:

*262 animals sterilized: If every one of those animals produced a litter of 6 in the next year, within three years we prevented over 56.000 births!

*262 animals vaccinated, dewormed, and given flea/tick control – improving the quality of life for the animals we serviced by ridding them of preventable disease and parasitism

*16 dogs rescued: 12 puppies and 4 dogs were rescued from the clinic via our international dog rescue program

*Governmental Meetings: CWOB met with the mayor of Puerto Peñasco and set the wheels in motion for ongoing spay/neuter and humane euthanasia efforts. We are grateful for the progressive leadership the local government is showing to support humane reform for animals.
